Edge of Little Rock

Just the one night in town
Late October, passing through
Warm breeze from yesteryear
I thought about calling you
We had some good times back then
Maybe you’re married now
Last I knew you were in Benton
Still I wish some way, some how
Looked you up on Facebook
I knew we shouldn’t talk
You were swimming through my mind
On a sleepless night in Little Rock

All the leaves were changing
It’s time for a change of scene
I was on my way to California,
Detour the Land of Opportunity
I almost caught a chill
As lonesome memories fell
The rain was cold steady
When I arrived at the hotel
I couldn’t get to sleep
So I went out for a walk
The autumn hills are lovely
Out on the edge of Little Rock

You were waiting on the corner
Where hopes and sorrows collide
I thought I’d say, hello
Instead, I walked on by
There wasn’t much to say
At least nothing new with me
Just a few passing thoughts
Left to float the Mississippi
No need to see me now
So I crossed the city block
Where yellow gingkos were lined
Along the edge of Little Rock

Forgiven and forgotten
Hard for me to believe such a thing
You had the last laugh
Leaving the Ouachitas that spring
It was senior year
We were returning to Pine Bluff
But I-30 cut straight west
And Texas wasn’t far enough
Engine howling through the Rockies
I had enough of all the talk
Time for a change of scenery
Jumping from the edge of Little Rock.
